Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) McDonnell Douglas F/A-18B Hornet Fighter Aircraft A21-111 and A21-112 at Rockhampton Airport

The skies over Rockhampton came alive with the sound of military fast jets again on Friday 22 November with a pair of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) McDonnell Douglas F/A-18B Hornet fighter aircraft making an unscheduled, but most welcome visit to Rockhampton Airport.  The Hornets - A21-111 and A21-112 - of No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit (No. 2 OCU) were flying from RAAF Base Williamtown, near Newcastle in New South Wales to Townsville, when they called into Rocky for fuel.  Both Hornets departed from Rockhampton to Townsville in the early afternoon, and the were heard to use the radio callsign of "Hunter".  Local plane spotter Dave made it Townsville Airport just in time to capture the arrival of the Hornets from Rockhampton, and he had kindly and very generously allowed me to share his fantastic images of their arrival!

Reports suggest that the RAAF Hornets are in Townsville for an upcoming Military Exercise.  In fact, more RAAF Hornets - as well as RAAF transport aircraft including a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III, an Airbus A330-203 / KC-30A (MRTT), and a Lockheed C-130J Hercules, as well as a RAAF Boeing B737-700(BBJ) and Beech B300 Super King Air - were captured arriving into Townsville on Thursday 21 November by local spotter 'Shinpow16'.

While local plane spotters at Rockhampton were caught by surprise by these fantastic visitors on Friday, we'd like to thank the Townsville plane spotters for kindly allowing us to bring you some photos of these rather fantastic aircraft!
