Thick Fog Closes Brisbane Airport Friday Night - Massive Disruptions - Flights Diverted - Flights Cancelled - And More Saturday Morning!

Around 8pm on Friday 7 July, a thick blanket of fog rolled across Brisbane and soon after, visibility at Brisbane Airport was reduced to as low as 100 metres.  Clearly, aircraft were unable to land, and with the 'unforecast' fog catching airlines 'off-guard' flights were quickly diverted or returned to their point of origin as other Airports around the South-East corner, and even Rockhampton Airport, were reported as being 'full' and 'unable to accept anymore aircraft'.  Here is a quick summary of how Central Queensland was affected, including some photos captured by local plane spotter Daniel B who was at Rockhampton Airport as several aircraft arrived.

Firstly, during the afternoon, with holding procedures already in place around Brisbane Airport, Virgin Australia Boeing B737-800 VH-VOR operating VOZ38 from Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea) to Brisbane diverted to Rockhampton Airport to take on additional fuel.

After taking on said fuel, VH-VOR continued to Brisbane and landed ok.

Later, Virgin Australia Embraer E-190 VH-ZPT operating VOZ620 Mackay to Brisbane diverted to Rockhampton Airport and stayed.

Virgin Australia Embraer E-190 VH-ZPO operating VOZ786 Cairns to Brisbane diverted to Rockhampton Airport.  It departed back to Cairns soon after.

Virgin Australia (Alliance Airlines) Fokker F-100 VH-UQW operating VOZ1252 Rockhampton to Brisbane diverted to Hervey Bay (Fraser Coast) Airport.  It then continued South to the Sunshine Coast where it stayed.

Jestar Airways Airbus A320 VH-VFT operating JST833 Proserpine (Whitsunday Coast) to Brisbane diverted to the Sunshine Coast and stayed.

QantasLink Dash-8-Q400 VH-LQK operating QLK2369 Rockhampton to Brisbane returned to Rockhampton Airport and stayed.

QantasLink Dash-8-Q400 VH-QOX operating QLK2343 Gladstone to Brisbane diverted to Hervey Bay (Fraser Coast) Airport and stayed.

QantasLink Dash-8-Q400 VH-LQQ operating QLK2345 Gladstone to Brisbane returned to Gladstone Airport and stayed.

QantasLink Dash-8-Q300 VH-SBJ operating QLK2553 Roma to Brisbane returned to Roma Airport and stayed.

Finally, even the Friday evening freight flights around CQ were affected by the fog with General Aviation Maintenance (GAM) Dornier DO 228-200 VH-VJN diverted to Maryborough Airport while enroute from Rockhampton to Brisbane.  And Toll Freight Express Metro 23 VH-UZN diverted to Rockhampton Airport while operating the evening TFX107 flight from Townsville to Brisbane.

Of course, there could be others but this is what I have been able to find after a quick search this morning.

The sum total of all these aircraft not being able to get into Brisbane on Friday night saw a massive flow-on effect for flights early on Saturday 8 July with only three aircraft reportedly at the Brisbane Domestic Airport!

Sincere thanks to Daniel B for taking the time to capture and send through these great photos!
